UK will not meet carbon neutral housing targets say intermediaries

06-Mar-2007

In a survey, which could interest prospective first time buyers, a majority of mortgage intermediaries do not believe the UK will meet its target for carbon neutral homes, new research suggests.

According to the results of a study by UCB Home Loans, 67 per cent of respondents confirmed their expectation that the UK will not meet its target of all new homes being carbon neutral by 2016, which may be of interest to first time buyers looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

As part of the study, UCB Home Loans sought responses from 1,000 mortgage intermediaries.

"The views of intermediaries are important, because they are responsible for arranging a large proportion of all home loans - including new build developments," said Keith Astill, managing director of UCB Home Loans.

"They deal directly with homebuyers and so are ideally placed to make a judgement," he added.

According to the study, UCB Home Loans also found that 98 per cent of mortgage advisers hold the opinion that homeowners are unaware of the size of their own carbon footprint.

UCB Home Loans is the specialist lending division of Nationwide Building Society.
