Teesside awarded £4.5m to tackle housing problems

05-Sep-2006

Breaking First Time Buyer News from FirstRungNow: New affordable homes could be available to first time buyers in the South Bank area of Teesside, as Redcar and Cleveland Council is awarded £4.5 million to tackle housing market problems.

Over the next year, 200 properties will be demolished in order to "build a better community", with the potential for new developments seeing first time buyers gaining access to affordable housing.

Councillor Chris Abbott, cabinet minister for housing and neighbourhood renewal, said: "[This is] about building a better and more sustainable community, one that we've promised the people of South Bank and one that they deserve and one that this cash will allow us to deliver."

Meanwhile, councillor Ian Jeffrey, the chairman of South Bank Housing Strategy Steering Group, said: "The people of South Bank are looking forward to the difference this money will make to improve their environment and their quality of life."

The investment comes from the Housing Market Renewal Fund and adds last year's Single Housing Investment Pot allocation of £2.826 million, bringing the total amount to be spent in the area on tackling housing problems to £7.356 million.
