05-Dec-2005

The government has announced it will implement a new Code for Sustainable Homes to improve current levels of environmental safeguards.

Allowing aspiring homeowners to choose a property that meets their energy saving requirements, the code will ensure that all new housing developments built with public money meet a certain standard.

A star rating system will be used to show how energy efficient and sustainable the property is, helping first time buyers to make an informed choice.

Housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper commented: "This shows that we can improve environmental protection and build new homes at the same time.

"By making more efficient use of water and materials and improving the environmental protections in the planning system we will ensure that the new homes we need are built in a more sustainable way."

The code follows recent surveys which indicate that energy efficiency is a growing issue for aspiring homeowners and affects their choice of where to get on the first rung of the property ladder.
