Scottish first time buyers 'dependent on parents'

First time buyers in Scotland are increasingly depending on parents to provide them with financial support and are being forced to fund bigger deposits to get onto the housing ladder, a new report has revealed.

First time buyers in rural areas are particularly badly effected, according to the Scottish Housing Market Review 2007, with minister for communities and sport Stewart Maxwell saying that resolving the problems was "a top priority".

"A healthy housing supply forms the bedrock of fairer, stronger and safer communities," Mr Maxwell commented in the Scottish Parliament.

The report is issued as a study found that providing £2,000 grants to first time buyers had been deemed "ineffective" in Australia, the country in which it was pioneered.

The SNP has pledged to introduce the grant within its first 100 days in office, though a spokesman told the Herald newspaper that any proposals were "subject to the spending review".
