Over 100,000 London homes 'at risk of subsidence'

23-Feb-2007

In news which may be of interest to prospective first time buyers, more than 100,000 homes in Greater London may be at risk of subsidence.

According to the results of a survey commissioned by esure.com, the increased subsidence risk has been caused by a trend towards converting garden areas into parking spaces, which may interest prospective first time buyers looking to buy a similar style property.

"It is very appealing for homeowners in busy streets to create a bespoke parking space for their property," said Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure.

"Unfortunately, for houses with a street tree or large front garden tree nearby this can significantly increase the risk of subsidence," she added.

Such conversions can be problematic as they can lead to rainwater "running off" into drains rather than entering the soil, causing tree roots to search for sources of water; and, even the conversion of a neighbour's property can cause an impact.

Esure offers a range of insurance products, including cover for travel, pets and cars.
