The leaders of the Newcastle Great Park (NGP) consortium, which consists of housebuilders Persimmon and Taylor Woodrow, say that they have reached "pivotal point in discussions" in their moves to develop the area.

As the group prepares to re-submit its bid to Newcastle City Council, it has revealed that the residential part of its project has already been given the go-ahead, bringing affordable housing for first time buyers and key workers in the north east a step closer.

It has made changes to its masterplan to provide more sustainable communities and ensure that the project is economically feasible.

Persimmon Homes' regional project director Peter Jordan added that the group has put £10 million aside for the creation of affordable houses which will be built for keyworkers in the region, working both in the new town and in Newcastle itself.
