New commission into affordable housing

19-Sep-2006

Breaking First Time Buyer News from FirstRungNow: First time buyers could see greater access to affordable housing following a new commission into regeneration on the Thames Gateway.

Dr Tim Williams, former chief executive of the London Thames Gateway Strategic Partnership, is the newly appointed chair of a Housing Corporation commission, which will look into affordable housing design and quality.

The commission will provide information on the Housing Corporation's expectations for homes that deserve grant funds.

Dr Williams said: "Design standards for affordable housing in the gateway have to be exemplary if we are to attract and retain mixed communities to live and work there."

He added that the commission has the cooperation of "some of the best businesses" and will draw on the experience of local authorities, property builders and housing associations.

The Housing Corporation is a national government agency that regulates housing associations and provides funds for new affordable housing schemes in England.
