Liberal Democrat Mike Hancock wasted no time in posting an Early Day Motion (EDM), reacting to a recent report from the National Housing Federation.

The member for Portsmouth South has tabled the motion to lobby the government to build more affordable housing in the south-east, pointing to the fact that the region is currently running at less than one third of the regional planning guidance minimum target for affordable and social housing.

Therefore, first time buyers are finding it very difficult to get onto the property ladder, as they are finding it very difficult to find a deposit, or find the money for a mortgage.

His motion calls on the government to "increase substantially investment" in affordable housing in the region, so that more aspiring homeowners are able to get a foot on the property ladder.

An EDM is a motion tabled by an MP to bring attention to a certain issue, and can be signed by all other MPs who wish to express their support of the matter. The motion can have an impact on government policy if it gathers enough interest from MPs.
