The council has launched a scheme to make buying cheap housing easier, offering buyers the chance to invest in an shared ownership venture, making it ideal for those on lower incomes.

Shared or joint ownership can be a good alternative route for those looking to get on the first rung of the property ladder, as mortgage payments are reduced and there is always the option of purchasing the whole property in the future.

Key worker homes will also be available under the scheme, with almost 150 properties earmarked for people in professions such as teaching, nursing and policing.

"One of the council's ambitions is 'Good housing for all' and part of this is about providing high quality affordable homes for Stevenage people," Ann Webb, executive councillor for housing, told the Herald.
