Local church announces housing development plans

02-Mar-2007

Potential first time buyers in a Yorkshire village are being offered affordable homes to rent so they do not move away from the area.

Bradford Diocese has received approval to build two homes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in order to encourage would-be first time buyers who are priced out of the market to stay in the village as tenants rather than look elsewhere for a house.

According to the Yorkshire Post, the parish council at Dent claims that one in five properties in the village are second homes and is currently working with a housing association to discuss the construction of affordable homes for young families.

"This is a piece of land for which we get a very small yearly rental and as the area continues to lose young people who can't afford to buy in the area, it struck us that we could put the land to better use," commented David Meadows, property officer for the diocese.

As part of the planning proposals, the Church of England body will build two properties and is expected to work with the local authority to decide which residents are offered the new homes.
