Kitchens important to first time buyers

23-Aug-2007

First time buyers and other would-be new homeowners place most importance on the kitchen, a new study from Legal & General shows.

The importance of space is clearly paramount, with a large garden the next most valuable asset that a property can have, according to the research. Sixteen per cent of respondents opted for a large kitchen while 15 per cent said that a garden was important.

Scope for extensions and renovations is also important, with nine per cent saying that this is their key factor when choosing a new home.

"The look and feel of today's homes is changing to reflect the changing demographics of different groups of people. What may be important to some is different to others when it comes to buying their home," commented Legal & General's general insurance business head of communications Ruth Wilkins.

But 80 per cent of first time buyers are forced to compromise on space when it comes to their first home, research published this week has shown.
