Insurer urges DIY caution

21-Mar-2007

In news which may be of interest to first time buyers, an insurance firm is urging homeowners to ensure they are protected from any potential DIY disasters.

According to research by Churchill, every year Britons experience DIY accidents worth £2.6 billion, which can include things such as falling off ladders, drilling into water pipes and spilling paint, which may be of interest to would-be first time buyers excited at the prospect of renovating their new home.

Indeed, 51 per cent of respondents to the study confirmed they are "not very good at DIY", while 79 per cent said they would like to be better at home improvements.

"Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home," said Martin Scott, head of home insurance at Churchill.

The study of 2,628 respondents was conducted in February 2007.

Churchill offers insurance of differing types, including home and travel cover.
