Innovative affordable housing scheme unveiled

First time buyers in Scotland, who suffer from severe household allergies, will welcome the introduction of a new affordable housing scheme.

The anti-allergy homes have been created in an attempt to cater for aspiring homeowners who have previously been unable to buy a property because of the problem of recurrent allergies.

Specialists have designed the properties to be as allergy free as possible, replacing solvent based products with oil based materials and using clay walls to reduce the existence of dust mites and damp.

Developed by Castle Rock Edinvar housing association, the homes are part of an affordable housing initiative taking place on an old tenement block and aim to encourage more people on to the property ladder.

"Housing like this could be a lifesaver for people who can be ill for weeks if they come into contact with something they are allergic to. It's a fantastic idea," Lindsey McManus, deputy information manager at allergy charity Allergy UK, told the Scotsman.
