"With house prices out of control, we could have a desperate shortage of teachers, policemen and nurses if we do not help these key workers find a home," Ms Teather commented.
Following these claims, the government has proposed new criteria to determine a worker's eligibility in a bid to fill the homes and help more key workers get on the first rung of the property ladder.
Schemes will now be open to clinical NHS staff, social workers, prison staff and local authority planners.
