Home buyers in Spain 'should' get legal advice

04-Apr-2007

In news which may be of interest to first time home buyers considering a property purchase, Spanish property purchasers are being reminded to ensure they have sought legal advice before closing the deal.

According to Les Calvert from PropertyAbroad.com, although there are home buyers - which may including first time home buyers - making purchases in Spain without taking advice, this is potentially fraught with problems.

"The biggest thing that people need to ensure is that they understand what they're signing and they make sure that they have translation," said Mr Calvert, director of PropertyAbroad.com.

"So at the notary's office, when they physically come to sign for the property, [buyers should] make sure that they know exactly what it is they're signing," he added.

Indeed, as it is possible for a property to have associated debts or to contravene Spanish planning legislation, legal advice may make the purchaser aware of any additional complications.
