Hips will aid first-time buyers

10-Mar-2006

Home Information Packs (Hips) are set to become a first-time buyer's best friend, according to one industry expert.

Director general of the Association of Home Information Pack Providers (AHIPP), has commented on the Conservative Party's proposal to delay the introduction of the packs.

Mike Ockendon said that he agreed with the party that something needed to be done to aid aspiring homeowners to get their foot on the first rung of the property ladder.

However, he disagreed with the fact that the Conservatives believe that Hips will hold first-time buyers back.

Mr Ockendon said that Hips are actually set to benefit those who wish to purchase their first home.

"The introduction of Hips will actually help more of these buyers take their first step onto the property ladder by making the process of buying a home more affordable," he said.

The packs, which are set to be introduced in June 2007, will include a Home Condition Report, which will underline any potential problems with a property.

Information will also be provided to first-time buyers about how much they can expect to pay in utility bills.

Mr Ockendon concluded that Hips could "only be good news" for aspirational first-time buyers.
