Help on the way for first-time buyers in Chester

Prime minister Tony Blair reassured Chester city MP Christine Russell yesterday that the government fully understands the problems being experienced by first-time buyers in the area.
Mr Blair reiterated that he is keen to help aspiring homeowners in the north-west city to get their foot on the first rung of the property ladder, reports the Chester Evening Leader.

"I highlighted the downside of our ongoing economic success story in Chester, and that is the problem of escalating house prices," Ms Russell told the newspaper.
Ms Russell went on to say that one of the main problems lies in the fact that some mortgage companies are reluctant to offer loans on shared equity schemes.

"There is a need for affordable family homes, and too many people have to make do in upstairs maisonettes," Ms Russell concluded.
