Help on the way for first-time buyers in Chester

09-Mar-2006

Prime minister Tony Blair reassured Chester city MP Christine Russell yesterday that the government fully understands the problems being experienced by first-time buyers in the area.

Mr Blair reiterated that he is keen to help aspiring homeowners in the north-west city to get their foot on the first rung of the property ladder, reports the Chester Evening Leader.

Ms Russell was invited to a meeting at 10 Downing Street to discuss the issue and the problems of affordable housing in the area.

"I highlighted the downside of our ongoing economic success story in Chester, and that is the problem of escalating house prices," Ms Russell told the newspaper.

Ms Russell went on to say that one of the main problems lies in the fact that some mortgage companies are reluctant to offer loans on shared equity schemes.

In response, Mr Blair commented that the government is planning to provide housing subsidy help as part of its Comprehensive Spending Review.

"There is a need for affordable family homes, and too many people have to make do in upstairs maisonettes," Ms Russell concluded.

Average house prices in Chester currently stand at £180,000
