Help for first-time buyers may be required to overcome setback

01-Apr-2010

The amount of help for first-time buyers required may be set to increase, after one property expert revealed the availability of popular new-build homes is set to fall.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Company, said new properties often create significant interest in the market as they offer incentivised deals.

Prices in the sector - which are typically lower than in several others - may be particularly appealing to first-time buyers.

But Mr Turner stated an improving market is set to dry up the range of offers made by developers in order to sell the homes they create.

Although there remains a "long way to go," he asserted, stabilisation is upon us and could soon lead to a return to price increases.

According to research by SmartNewHomes.com, the average cost of a new-build property fell by 1.6 per cent in February, but demand price rose by almost five per cent.
