Government 'makes it easier to be energy efficient'

02-Sep-2009

First-time buyers hoping to make their home environmentally-friendly may be interested in developments in the government's climate change provisions.

Schemes across the UK will help people buying their first property, among other householders, reduce their bills by 20 per cent in some areas of the country.

This is part of a new community-based efficiency plan outlined by energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband.

Some £350 million is to be spent by energy companies over the next three years in order to conduct whole street makeovers.

Furthermore, in 2010 there will be a trial of a Pay as You Save scheme, which accounts for whole house retrofits.

Commenting on the recent announcement from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Mr Miliband said: "As government, we are in the best position to make it as easy as possible for everyone to cut their carbon emissions."

One of the ways in which first-time buyers may want to make their homes greener is by installing insulation.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, cavity wall insulation can save around £115 per year in bills.
