Government called on to invest in more key worker homes

24-May-2005

New research has revealed that many towns and cities across the UK are full of properties that are out of the price range of the majority of key workers.

Compiled using data from Halifax's housing statistics database, the annual Halifax Key Worker Housing Review has challenged the government to drive through its pre-election pledges and invest extensively in affordable housing for key workers.

According to the results, the percentage of towns unaffordable for nurses has increased from 55 per cent three years ago to 93 per cent today, highlighting the fact that there is a massive need for affordable housing for first time buyers.

While the government does not currently have any plans to build houses specifically for nurses or key workers, ministers have stated their intention to build affordable housing for young families.

It has become apparent that the problem is no longer confined to the capital, and as such many housing experts are calling on the government to build on its recent announcement to cut the cost of buying a house for first time buyers by boosting the amount of affordable housing specifically for key workers.

Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax, explained: The current government sponsored key worker schemes are weighted heavily towards London and the South East. There is now a strong case for the government to significantly extend the reach and impact of these schemes outside the south of England."
