28-Nov-2005

The Key Worker Living (KWL) Programme is running smoothly and successfully and is ahead of previously set targets, claims the Housing Corporation.

A report released by the government body indicates that the programme is working and helping a significant number of key workers to purchase a home and get on the first rung of the property ladder.

Figures show that over 7,000 workers will have benefited from the scheme this year, while 18, 244 have been helped overall.

"The KWL Programme is delivering much-needed new homes for those who run our essential and emergency services - the sort of people without whom towns and cities simply couldn't function, but who often cannot afford homes on the open market," commented Jon Rouse, Housing Corporation chief executive.

"The Corporation will put its 30 years-plus experience of managing affordable housing investment into making the KWL Programme a continuing success, dealing with every scheme on a case by case basis and moving quickly to ensure each home is occupied as soon as possible."

Mr Rouse emphasised that the corporation was committed to improving access to the scheme and said that new moves such as widening the definition of a key worker would help more aspiring homeowners to get on the property ladder.
