First time home buyer news: Government to boost first time buyer rights
16-Jun-2006
The government has outlined a three-way plan to boost the rights of first time buyers, movers and sellers in property purchase.
The strategy will centre on providing better information for consumers through home information packs (Hips), local searches, e-conveyancing and stronger redress against estate agents and others when things go wrong.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper, said: "For too many people, buying or selling their home is still a real nightmare, with long delays and duplication.
"People should be entitled to proper information at the beginning of the process. We know there are still vested interests who make money out of the current system and who are opposed to reform, but this is about getting a better deal for the consumer."
Meanwhile, consumer affairs minister Ian McCartney spoke of protecting first time buyers and movers against "rogue agents and unfair practices".
The government recently announced that Hips would be introduced on a voluntary basis ahead of their compulsory take up in 2007.
