First time home buyer news: New initiative to bring derelict homes 'back to life'
28-Jun-2006
A Liverpool scheme which gives first time buyers access to affordable homes, improves communities and increases council revenues has recently been praised.
The initiative, which also helps counter the negative effect on property prices experienced by many first time buyers, aims to bring derelict homes back into use.
In the last 12 months, Liverpool City Council's vacant and dilapidated property initiative has seen almost 500 run-down houses used again, according to online public sector news service 24dash.com.
Councillor Marilyn Fielding, Liverpool's executive member for neighbourhoods, told the online publication: "This is an excellent initiative. It can stop an area going downhill and brings houses back into use for families who desperately need them."
As well as increasing the number of homes available to first time buyers in the city, the scheme has improved community life by reducing anti-social behaviour.
An affordable homes scheme has also been announced in Bingham, near Nottingham, where nine new houses will be built on a garage site which is currently plagued by fly-tippers dumping rubbish.
