First time buyers see land freed for London development
20-Sep-2006
Over 100 hectares of brownfield land currently owned by the Ministry of Defence will be freed up for home building as the department upgrades its facilities within the M25.
Hence first time buyers will see land at the Royal Air Force's Northholt site become available for property building.
Derek Twigg, defence minister, said: "I am delighted that … over 100 hectares of predominantly brownfield land can be used to provide thousands of new homes for London."
London mayor Ken Livingstone welcomed the news as "excellent", saying that the recycling of brownfield land was "good news for Londoners".
Mr Livingstone indicated that developing the city's "precious open spaces" is not under consideration and that the new site would help meet the pressure of increasing population growth.
The number of people living in the city is set to increase by 800,000 over the next ten years, the mayor said.
