First-time buyers in Scotland 'still keen' to get on the ladder

10-Jun-2008

Scotland's first-time buyers are as keen as their property-owning counterparts when it comes to purchasing at the moment, it has been claimed.

The managing director of property agency Rettie and Co, Simon Rettie, says the number of Scottish owner-occupiers will continue to rise as long as people retain the desire to own their own home - and the ability to access adequate funds.

"At the bottom end where people are getting onto the ladder for the first time, they are as keen to do so as those at the top end who may be moving up, down or sideways," he remarked.

Bank Of Scotland figures released last month indicated that the number of owner-occupiers in Scotland increased to 1.528 million in 2006 compared to 1.403 million in 2001 - an 8.9 per cent rise compared to the UK’s 3.1 average.

According to Halifax, Scotland saw the biggest house price rises in the UK in last year, with a 13.1 per cent rise compared to an average of 5.2 per cent.
