First-time buyers 'benefitting from HomeBuy scheme'

27-May-2009

First-time buyers are one of the main groups benefitting from the government's HomeBuy Direct scheme, it has been suggested.

According to Paula Carter, south-east regional sales manager for homebuilder Taylor Wimpey, it is those looking to get their first property and families that currently rent accommodation who the programme really appeals to.

HomeBuy Direct allows people shared ownership of a home with their local council and gradually get helps them into a position where they own the property outright.

Ms Carter said: "It is proving extremely popular at the present time."

Three-bedroom town houses are particularly sought after among HomeBuy customers, she added.

People are finding that they are able to buy their own property "when they didn't think they'd be able to", the expert continued.

Earlier this month, the National Association of Estate Agents said that first-time buyer confidence has returned to the property market and there are currently bargain homes to be found on the market.
