First mortgage 'to give buyers access to expanding market'

The workload of an increasing number of construction experts is on the rise, new research shows, which could be good news for those currently taking first mortgage advice.

According to a study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics), five per cent more surveyors are enjoying more rather than less work.

It is the first time in two years that the figures have been positive - perhaps indicating the UK housing market is finally over the recession.

And Nick Whitten, business editor at Construction News, says the figures indicate at least some parts of the industry are growing again.

"Certain areas are definitely recovering – house building being a good example," he explains.

The increase in property being built may mean more availability for first-time buyers who are currently taking mortgage advice with a view to purchasing a home.

Bernard Clarke, spokesperson for the Council for Mortgage Lenders, recently said conditions are currently ideal for first-time buyers.
