Following increased warnings over a lack of affordable housing sites, a London firm has developed a new alternative way to help more aspiring homeowners get on the property ladder.

Double Decker Living has converted the old buses into fully equipped living spaces, with private sleeping areas upstairs and a kitchen and bathroom downstairs, reports BBC News.

The newly designed mobile homes also include flat screen TVs, DVD players, solar panels and foldaway bicycles, as well as recycling bins for energy conscious buyers.

"Everyone I speak to laughs because it sounds so strange but once they see it for themselves, they become very enthusiastic about the idea," commented operations manager Jason Hart.

"Each berth on the bus, which is only big enough for a bed, a cupboard and a lamp, is lockable, as are the entrance doors of the vehicles."

Mr Hart said that although the housing is considered a short-term measure, it would be particularly useful for key worker housing, while plans to extend the range are also being considered.
