Demand for housing advice

15-Dec-2008

There is a high demand among younger Britons for advice about purchasing their first home, an expert has said.

Paul Sellers, housing policy adviser at the Trades Union Congress (TUC), commented on the organisation's publication entitled A Place to Live: A Guide to Housing Options for Young People.

More Britons could be looking for first mortgage advice as falling house prices provide new opportunities to get on to the housing ladder.

On the TUC guide, Mr Sellers commented: "We found there was a demand for young people wanting to find out about housing, they can talk to their friends and family but there wasn't a general guide, particularly for young people."

According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders' news and views newsletter, published last month, a typical homebuyer put down a deposit of £19,000 between April and June this year to buy their first property.

During this period, first-time buyers accounted for 38 per cent of all housing transactions, which was the highest level recorded since the start of 2006.
