Christmas rush not putting off buyers

16-Nov-2007

Received opinion may be that home buyers turn their attentions elsewhere in the run-up to Christmas, but new research from Alliance & Leicester Mortgages has suggested that the hectic festive period isn't deterring many buyers.

The firm's research shows that one in eight buyers would be happy to move in December despite most Britons' attentions turning to the holiday season at this time.

What's more, a quarter of Britons move home in the 12-week run up to Christmas, the study added, though this could be due to completion dates frustrating many buyers at this time.

A quarter of those in the south-east wait some four months after having their offer accepted and actually moving in to their home, Alliance & Leicester revealed.

This contrasts with just one in ten Scottish movers who have to wait a similar period of time. But whatever the delay, most first time buyers and other movers have budgeted for the Christmas period accordingly – with many perhaps seeing the holiday season as the ideal time to request parental help in their quest to get onto the housing ladder.

"It is very encouraging to see many people are planning ahead to budget for their moving costs a
nd saving in advance to ensure it doesn't have a big impact on their Christmas," said Alliance & Leicester director of mortgages Stephen Leonard.

"Clearly planning ahead, budgeting and saving are the key to a less stressful move," Mr Leonard added.

House prices rose by 0.3 per cent in September, according to the latest Land Registry figures.
