Chancellor's house building proposals 'welcomed'

15-May-2007

In news which may be of interest to would-be first time home buyers, the chancellor's announcement on the development of green housing has been welcomed.

According to a representative from the Home Builders Federation (HBF), the announcement that 200,000 new environmentally-friendly homes are to be constructed each year is welcome, although further details should be provided, which may interest prospective first time home buyers concerned over a shortage of housing stock.

"It's great that the chancellor seems to be endorsing the need to increase housing supply," said a spokesman from the HBF.

"What we're waiting for [particularly] is how this [announcement] relates to what the government has announced so far," he added.

However, although the introduction of environmental targets is unavoidable, existing housing stock should also be included for emission reduction, the organisation added.

On Sunday, Gordon Brown pledged his support for the development of five new "eco-towns".
