Cameron calls for affordable housing

Conservative leader David Cameron has attacked the government for making homeownership among the young "the preserve of the lucky few" and has promised to help first time buyers.

Speaking in Chiswick, west London, where he was meeting first time buyers, Mr Cameron explained how he "passionately believed" that home ownership was a universal right for every British citizen.

Experts have seen the move as a shift from the traditional Tory position opposing new homebuilding, described by the Telegraph today as a "not in my back yard" policy, which goes against Mr Cameron's social justice agenda.

"The failure to provide an adequate number of new homes in Britain has contributed to the affordability problem," Mr Cameron said.

"This situation is bananas… I say it's bananas because it's a system that encourages people to believe that we should Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone."

Mortgage lenders have risen to the challenge of creating a growing number of options for first time buyers.

Mr Cameron's U-turn support for new affordable housing may cause division among Conservative MPs, many of whom campaigned locally against housing at the last general election.

John Prescott's Office of the Deputy Prime Minister plans to build 20 million more homes across the south-east of England in the next 20 years.
