Calls for more affordable housing for key workers

07-Oct-2005

The UK needs to implement more affordable homes schemes and improve accommodation for key workers, according to the director general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Sir Digby Jones has warned over a shortfall of affordable housing, especially for key workers, and believes that more must be done to tackle this "key business issue".

Longer life expectancy has increased the average age of first time buyers over the last 25 years, rising from 24 to 31, and the changing demographics of the nation has resulted in a lack of affordable housing, according to Sir Digby.

Key workers, including nurses, teachers and postal workers often find themselves priced out of the property market and rely on the development of low cost housing options to enable them to get on the first rung of the property ladder.

"I want a society where the lower-paid postal workers, nurses and teachers, especially south of Birmingham can afford a house. They can't at the moment," Sir Digby commented.

He called for at least 200,000 more houses to be built across the UK and urged the government and the construction industry to take action.
