Brownfield redevelopment 'would create 1m new homes'

30-Aug-2006

A recent report by the Department for Local Communities and Government (DCLG) could provide struggling first time buyers with hope, after news that approximately 30,000 hectares of brownfield land was available for housing development in 2005.

In the south-east of England alone, there is currently enough brownfield land to accommodate an additional 400,000 new homes.

"This government has made it clear that suitable brownfield land must be a priority for any new development and that is why three-quarters of all new developments are already being built on previously developed sites," said Baroness Kay Andrews, Lords planning minister.

"By making the most of suitable brownfield land, local authorities can continue to protect the countryside while ensuring there are more homes available for first time buyers," she added.

According to government figures, the number of new housing developments, over the last 12 months to June, was nearly 183,000.
