Brown 'to focus on affordable housing for first time buyers'

26-Sep-2006

In his speech at the Labour Party conference yesterday, Mr Brown spoke of a "good society", focusing on affordable housing as one of the key challenges for government.

As providers of affordable homes, housing associations will be important in addressing the challenges highlighted by Mr Brown, according to the National Housing Federation (NHF).

David Orr, chief executive of the NHF, said: "If the government is serious about delivering the kind of vibrant and inclusive neighbourhoods described in Gordon Brown's speech today, then it will need to work with housing associations."

He said that more could be achieved to bring about "prosperous" and inclusive neighborhoods if housing associations are given the full backing of the government.

Earlier this year, research from the Co-operative Bank revealed that many first time buyers have to save for six years for the deposit they need on their first home.
