With the opportunity to develop 1,000 affordable homes aimed at first time buyers, the former NHS site is the first area to be opened up since the government launched its plans to provide more affordable housing on former public land.

As part of the plans by the national regeneration agency, 130 of the affordable homes will be set aside for the development of innovative and energy efficient houses, through the agency's design and manufacture competition.

The scheme will form the first phase of housing developed under the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's (ODPM) First Time Buyers' Initiative (FTBI), and the government has revealed that the site will also be an important area for the development of key worker homes.

Deputy prime minister John Prescott explained: "This surplus hospital site in Basingstoke will provide over 1,000 homes to rent, part-own or buy for a wide range of people including first time buyers and key workers like nurses and teachers."
