Affordable housing project underway in Wales

07-Nov-2008

The Welsh Assembly government has announced that construction of 6,500 new homes across the country is underway.

In news which could interest first-time buyers (FTBs) currently saving up for their first home, the first project is a 28-home development in Bargoed.

Jocelyn Davies, deputy minister for housing, who recently attended the site of the project to help lay bricks, welcomed the United Welsh Housing Association's move to create new, high quality housing.

She said the housing associations are vital to the delivery of affordable housing, which will also meet strict new energy efficiency standards.

"By working together to find more innovative ways of creating new housing, it will enable us to achieve our goal to provide 6,500 new build affordable homes over the next four years," Ms Davies commented.

The use of micro hyphen?generation and renewable materials in the project is being supported and promoted by the Welsh Assembly, she added.

A recent survey by OneSearch Direct found that 70 per cent of potential FTBs, who were working full-time and under the age of 35, said they would continue to save money to buy their first home, despite problems in the housing market caused by the economic downturn.
