09-Sep-2005

The Scottish Executive has confirmed that it has won a bid to buy up land in the west end and the south side of the city and that it intends to use the site to provide affordable housing options.

First time buyers will now have the chance to purchase properties in the city's hotspots, without the expensive price tag.

Although there is cheap housing available in some areas of the city, aspiring homeowners in the west end and south side were increasingly being priced out of the market, leading to calls for more affordable housing initiatives.

City council leader Steven Purcell has welcomed the decision and believes that the £12 million investment will be a real boost for potential house buyers looking to get on the first rung of the property ladder.

"This is great news for those desperate for affordable housing," he told the Glasgow Evening Times.

"This money will allow us to buy land and make sure it goes to Glaswegians who for too long have been priced out of the market."
