Do You Know What Kind of Boiler Your New Home Has? April 2008

It's easy to forget it's there, but your boiler really is the heart of your home. Most people don't want to think about it, but at some stage you will need it repaired or replaced, and a little knowledge about the basic types and how they work will help you avoid getting stung by the numerous cowboys working illegally in the business. If you're moving into a new home, remember to check what kind of boiler it has, as your boiler will be the most constant drain on your finances, and you could save yourself a lot of money by making sure you have the right kind for you.

The boiler used in most people's homes is a hydronic boiler. Water is heated to a preset temperature by gas or oil and then circulated throughout radiators by means of a motorised pump. These water boilers are far superior to the forced-air alternative. Remember the three E's – evenness, economy and efficiency. There are three main types of hydronic boiler commonly in operation.

Conventional Boiler

A primary tank of water boils to heat a secondary tank – usually made of copper – and provides a steady flow of hot water. These traditional boilers are still common in the UK, where heating systems are older and therefore more antiquated. They are somewhat inefficient and will generally be replaced by a modern system when they break down, rendering them obsolete.

Condensing Boiler

New boilers are usually condensing models which reuse steam that would otherwise have been lost. This saves valuable energy and money. Although the initial outlay for a condensing boiler is expensive, they're highly economical in the long-run, as well as being more eco-friendly. Combined with good insulation, these are the most efficient tank heating systems on the market.

Combi Boiler

The Combi boiler(or combination boiler) is a tankless system, and ideal for smaller houses or flats. They heat the water instantaneously as it flows through the device, which saves energy.

Remember to always use a CORGI registered engineer to fit your boiler. For further assistance, advice, and information on the types of boiler listed above, visit British Gas.
