Buying Property Abroad

Viewing your Property Abroad

It's vital that you make the time to view a number of potential properties before you commit to buying a property abroad.

Why is it so important? It's because you can't know everything about the property until you've seen it. Buying a home on the basis of a brochure, or some pictures on the internet isn't a thorough enough way to decide where to spend your money. You need to be sure that the property possesses all the things you need and want before you put in an offer to buy.

Location

It may have looked perfect on the photographs, but you can't guarantee the location until you've visited it yourself. The home may be next to a busy road, or in the middle of a new development. It may be much further away from the beach than you wanted, or be in a rural spot with bad access. Only by visiting can you be sure that it meets your criteria.

Choice

If you're making the effort to fly or drive to the country where you want to buy your property abroad, then make sure you have several properties lined up to view. It helps to see more than one property, because you can compare locations, facilities and amenities straightaway. A good agent will be able to show you a range of properties in your price range, and then you'll be in a good position to decide which is best for you.

Standard

It's easy for photos to disguise the standard of a property abroad. By visiting the area and viewing the property, you can take a close look at the standard of building and at the current state of the property. A property that looked great from the front could need some work doing to the back, and there may be modernisation needed inside. The only way to find out if the property is worth the asking price is to go and take a look around.

You wouldn't buy a home in the UK without viewing it first; the same goes for a property abroad. It's worth the plane fare in the long term, if you are sure that you're buying a sound property in the right location.
